I have a birdwatching friend who can locate and recognize a bird hidden in thick foliage just by hearing its song. Every bird has its own voice, its own song. So do we. “Our Song” is my summer subject.

No one can be you and you can’t be anyone else. Those positions are already taken. We might as well then do the real work of being who we really are. Deep down (beyond our personalities) the mystery of who that is needs to be experienced and revealed day by day. A good morning question I can ask myself might be “What is authentic to be about today?” Such a question can be answered with real gusto and conviction one day and with total silence and confusion the next.
Continuing from last time, answering “What is authentic to be about today?” is hard to do. We can’t always know. More questions come than answers. “Am I just showing off?” “Am I hiding?” “Am I just a habit” “What’s the real deal here?” As beloved poet, Rilke, put it, we have to live into the answers.
There are things that consistently show up in our lives as special moments when we are touched, when we feel part of something meaningful, when we can’t help but be fully engaged. They are messages that point to our authenticity. They aren’t passing thrills or addictions. They carry a soul connection and out of it we act authentically.
Every time we do something for its own sake it is an act of becoming. The soul needs to grow, to be inclusive and to express not for profit or fame, but to be fully alive.
If we already know something it can trap us. When we dare to be in the unknown (despite the uncertainty) engagements will be given to us and freshness. It is as if a window had been opened, and we can breathe, take heart and dare to become.
Our individual song (life expression) is not just ours alone. “Our” means more than “Me”.
Our song also implies a collective relationship i.e. what we can express and do together.
Continuing from last time . . . It’s important to see where our expression of something we love meets a need in the world. It almost always does. It will feel right and will keep us engaged.
Some people see a need in the world and it awakens their response (their creative song). Responding will feel like a vital and personal engagement. Others already know what their inner magic is and pour it out. Some need in the world will be enriched even if only one other person is touched by what was shared.
