Sharing the Gold

Reading the beautiful and truthful words of other writers I am in awe. This month I want to share the gold: quotes that have meaning and beauty for me. Sharing the gold seems to make the treasure bigger.

In the mood of contention that we have in our country now, here is a beauty from Ghandi: You can’t shake hands with a clenched fist.
A perennial quote from Confucius that is good to keep in our heart pockets:
Those who cannot forgive others break the bridge over which they themselves must pass.
Here is one by Anne Frank . . . only 8 words . . . and timelessly true:
No one has ever become poor by giving.
Here is a one by Lynne Twist: 
When you let go of trying to get more of what you don’t really need, it frees up oceans of energy to make a difference with what you have. When you make a difference with what you have, it expands.
Here’s a beauty from Desmond Tutu: Without forgiveness there is no future. To forgive is the only way to permanently change the world.
The wonderful poet Wendell Berry gives us this: Grief gives the full measure of love, and it is somehow reassuring to learn, even by suffering, how large and powerful love is.
Brother David Steindl-Rast has taught many people about gratitude. Here’s a quote from him: In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy . . . Love wholeheartedly, be surprised, give thanks and praise–then you will discover the fullness of your life.
Here is one we have all experienced and instinctively know. It’s from A Path WITH HEART by Jack Kornfield. The mind thinks of the self as separate, the heart knows better. As one great Indian master, Sri Nisargatta, put it: “The mind creates the abyss and the heart crosses it.”
